If you've ever broken the nib of a pencil by writing too hard on the page, you know how incredibly delicate the graphite material is. Despite its fragility, Taiwanese artist Li Jianzhu does not shy away from using brittle nibs as a medium. His creations cover a range of subjects, transforming ordinary pencils into breathtaking miniature sculptures by hand-carving the tips. Each tiny artwork showcases the artists admirable patience and steady hand.
It was Li Jianzhus dream to carve a chain from pencil lead, and after many trials and errors, he finally achieved it. "[I've] always wanted to do this, and even when I failed, I kept trying," Lee revealed. The incredible piece is made by carefully carving each tiny, individual link without breaking the nib. Its done. Lee was able to transform solid graphite rods into slender chains that look like metal. Lee was delighted with the end result, "He firmly believed that [nothing] could be better than this!"
