The ability to transform marble into skin or curtains is an awe-inspiring skill that confuses our senses of sight and touch - tricking our eyes into believing that objects we know as hard can be soft. Contemporary artist H?kon Anton Fager?s uses this classic technique in his pillow marble sculptures.
“The common thread in most of my work is vulnerability,” he says. “I usually carve figures and faces, but sometimes I carve marble pillows.” An ongoing series titled Down is a sight to behold. By using a variety of tools, including a pneumatic hammer, Faber?s managed to create soft pillows - all with the natural creases and folds of natural fabrics.
Despite the earthy appearance of the sculptures, Fager?s sees the pillows as "beautiful symbols of life." He believed that some of lifes best and toughest moments occur in bed, and that a pillow (perhaps in its natural softness) could capture this experience.
