Super detailed tutorial on hand-made bird pattern rubber stamps

The following is an ultra-detailed hand-made process for engraving rubber stamps. Each detail is accompanied by a picture. I believe that childrens shoes without any manual skills can be easily completed as long as they follow the steps step by step. Let’s take a look at the final rubber stamp first. It’s a cute bird pattern. If you like it, just follow it.

Rubber stamp making materials and tools:

At the beginning, let’s introduce the tools we will use today. Let’s take a picture first. You can compare my explanation with the labels in the picture.

1 Pen Knife, this is our main knife. I am currently using a 30-degree pen knife. Some people also use a 22.5-degree pen knife, a 45-degree engraving knife, or the most common bevel knife. In fact, this depends on personal preference.

2 small pill knives, used to hollow out small round holes.

3 A small corner knife is used to carve the lines when engraving. The weight of the knife will affect the thickness of the carved marks.

4 utility knives, used to cut rubber bricks. Because generally engraving is done by cutting off a small piece from a large rubber brick. At this time, a utility knife will be used. In fact, an ordinary knife will also work.

5 pencils, it is recommended to use pens such as 2B instead of HB. Pencils are used for tracing and transferring (rubbing) drawings, so the pencil is required to have more powder particles. A strong pencil is not easy to transfer after drawing.

6 Brush, choose a small brush with soft hair and no shedding.

7 Use eraser for sketching. Anyone who has used it knows that this eraser is malleable, soft in texture, and will not produce eraser chips.

8 sulfuric acid paper, translucent, strong transferability.

9 The rubber bricks used for engraving have different textures from the erasers used for learning. They are not easy to powder and are not easy to be penetrated by ink pads.

10 ink pads. There are many kinds of ink pads with different prices. The one in the photo can be used on cloth (cannot be washed off)~ The special ink pad will be much different from the one used on paper, so you don’t need to spend a few dollars to buy a high-end ink pad that can be used on cloth~~

11 handles, the handle installation makes the rubber stamp look more complete and more convenient to use~~In fact, you can use it by yourself, you can do it without it~~

Rubber stamp making steps:

First, we draw the pattern we want to engrave. In order to use the Kakutō and Maru Knife, I specially drew a lovebird (I made it up) as todays example.

Next, cover the pattern with tracing paper and trace it with a pencil. Do not move the paper while tracing~

Look, it’s done~

The next step is to transfer. Turn the tracing paper over the rubber brick and gently scrape it with your fingernail to imprint the image we just traced on the brick surface.

Look at the effect after printing.

Then, use a utility knife to cut out the rubber bricks we want to use. This reduces waste as much as possible.

Cut it off.

Start engraving!! Take the pen sharpener and engrave in the direction of the arrow as shown in the picture.

Continue to engrave in the direction of the arrow.

Then, dang dang dang~ carve it out in one piece, clean and neat, let’s take a look~~

You will find that the direction of the bird in the photo keeps changing. That is because, instead of moving the carving knife, it is better to let the left hand holding the eraser rotate in the opposite direction~~ to make the "eraser" "If you move, the knife will basically not move", it will be very easy~

Continue to engrave, and when you encounter a large blank space, you can divide it into several small pieces.

That’s it, we carved out all the spaces between the flowers on the bird’s wings~~ Next, we hollowed out the petals~~ PS, when the lines stand out like this, it’s called Yang carving~

Be careful when carving~~The knife must be tilted. You can take a look at my diagram (side view).

Look, the flowers are carved.

As for the flower center, it is round and very small, just poke it with a sharp needle~

The following is the carving of the birds body using the intaglio method. Use a corner knife to carve tiny lines.

Use a pill knife to dig out the round eyes.

After all the carvings are done, use a brush to gently remove the remaining eraser scraps.

You can basically tell~

Taking ink pads. Hold the ink pad and pat it evenly on the surface of the seal., so that the ink pad will not be wasted and the entire chapter will be neat.
