(Video of making a pirate ship out of cardboard)
Doesn’t such a pirate ship model look cool? If no one reminds you, you may not be able to guess its material just by looking at the surface!
Just collect a few unwanted cardboard boxes, which is the main cost of this pirate ship. If you are also a little tempted, follow the video and illustrations of this tutorial and try your best to try it!~
We need to prepare: pizza box, egg carton, hot glue gun, string, strong glue, paint, brush, pencil, white paper, carving knife, steel ruler, scissors.
If you only have a few hours a day to devote to this pirate ship, it may take up to 5 days to complete.
1. First draw the outline of the ship, then the top view of the deck.
2. This is the drawing of the hull frame, there will be a big picture below. All 10 are in A4 format (297x210mm), so it is recommended that you try to use them without changing the aspect ratio arbitrarily.
3. According to the drawings provided, first print them on white paper and cut them out.
4. Cut out the cardboard. The cardboard used here is 2mm thick, two for each part, so the final thickness is 4mm (except for the one in the orange drawing, which requires 4 layers, 8mm thick).
If using thicker or thinner cardboard, some patterns may need to be adjusted.
5. Then glue these cardboards together. If your cardboard is made exactly to the drawing, this should be easy.
6. Basically, the colored 1,2,3,4,5 pieces are glued to the brown A,B,C,D,E pieces and sit on top of the orange pieces.
7. The green pieces a, b, c, d are the decks, glue them to the top. Make sure to glue the deck horizontally.
8. Make some 15mm long strips of pizza box cardboard of the same thickness (2mm) and start gluing them to the hull frame.
9. Start from the bottom of the boat and work your way up.
10. Paste each strip against the previous strip.
11. Use green patterns a, b and d to make a top view of the railing.
12. You can make it wider, thicker or thinner. Here its 15mm wide and 6mm thick. Then for the posts, glue 3 small 30mm x 5mm cardboard pieces together.
13. Use pinstripe cardboard on the sides to add some details.
14. Even though these details are not obvious now, they will look great when painted.
15. Additionally we will add some round and square windows.
16.Obviously, we need a boat stand. Considering that I wanted to create a textured rock effect, I used egg cartons.
17. Tear out irregular pieces from the carton and glue them together. This type of paper mache is easy to glue into any shape you want.
18. Then use cardboard to make the main three pillars.
19. A column is about 20 mm thick. The middle one is the tallest, it is 360mm tall, the front one is 320mm and the last one is 220mm.
20. Next make the sail. 1a and 1b are for the front posts, 2a and 2b are slightly larger and are for the middle, and 3a is for the third post. Glue two pieces of cardboard together and bend it while the glue is still hot to create a curved sail.
21. We also need to add some lines to add a realistic effect to the ship.
22. It’s time to color. Start by covering the surface with a dark color, which will serve as your base color. All the cracks and insides are going to be painted, when we add the lighter color it will contrast like a shadow.
23. First paint the sailwhite, then add diluted brown to the top, dab it and dissolve it into the bottom until the sail looks more aged.
24. A realistic sailboat model is completed!
The raised bow and bulging sail seem to be calling us to jump on the side of the ship and start an adventure immediately~
