Traffic jam on the beach! Sand sculpture art calls for vigilance against climate change

Artist Leandro Erlich caused traffic jams in Miami Beach. His monumental, site-specific installation titled "Vital Order" contains 66 life-size sand sculptures of cars and trucks that appear to have been abandoned on the road.

Not only that, they have become integrated with the landscape itself. The piece is Erlichs largest installation to date, and his surreal vehicle formations were created in response to global climate change. The arrangement of cars is meant to evoke a feeling of ruins. The artists thought-provoking work raises awareness of what lies ahead for our future if we - especially our world leaders - don't take the threat of climate change seriously.

“Climate change and its consequences are no longer a matter of subjective consciousness,” explains Erlich. "The climate crisis has become an objective fact and needs an immediate solution. As an artist, I have been working hard to make people aware of this reality, especially the idea that we cannot abandon our responsibility to protect the earth."
