Appreciation of new works by performance artists: Life hatches eggs in boulders

French performance artist Abraham Poincheval.

French performance artist Abraham Poincheval locked himself in a 12-ton boulder at the Palais de Tokyo museum in Paris from February 22 to March 1 , as his latest performance art work "Stone". The boulder was drilled with holes to allow air circulation, and equipped with an emergency phone and an electrocardiogram. Cushions and books were also placed inside to help him pass the long hours.

"I think this is an inner journey to find out the nature of the world." Boancheval said.

In an interview with the French Press Agency (AFP), he said that he had been doing mental and physical training for several months in order to maintain a sitting position with his arms straight inside the boulder, and he was not worried about claustrophobia. The problem is, "We are already locked in our own bodies", but we are more worried about thoughts running wild during self-imprisonment.

As for how to go to the toilet, the artist was originally tight-lipped, but as time passed, he admitted that he would be liberated by sitting on a small container, and having to live with his own excrement was difficult for him with strong willpower. He said it was not a problem, "The stone will absorb some of the smell, I think I can live with it."

Abraham Poincheval lives on a platform more than 20 meters high in front of Paris-Gare de Lyon.

This eccentric and extreme-challenging form of expression is his unique artistic style. For example, last September he lived on a 20-meter-high platform in front of Paris-Gare de Lyon for 6 days; in July 2015, he sailed on the Rh?ne River in France in a huge cork bottle; in 2014, he put himself Stuffed into a hollowed-out bear model for 13 consecutive days; in October 2012, he stayed in a small hole in the "Histoire d'un Jour" bookstore in Marseille for a whole week.

Jean de Loisy, curator of the Palais de Tokyo in Paris, believes that Beauchevals work should not be regarded as a stunt performance, but a series of mysterious journeys. "These profound contemplations are inner explorations, and they are also about adjusting oneself and transcending the difficulties of life."

Bouancheval admitted that the weeks after the completion of this work will be the most painful moment. It took him several weeks to return to normal life after several previous performance art performances.

The next performance art performance "Egg" will be held at the same location on March 29. The artist will sit on a dozen eggs and incubate them for three to four weeks. He will eat a diet rich in ginger. To keep the body temperature above 37 degrees Celsius, the chick born from the egg will live with his parents.

However, these bizarre performance art performances cannot satisfy his ambition. He has a lofty ambition of "walking on the clouds". He has been working hard for 5 years, but has not yet been able to realize it.
