When designing and building a new house, our instinctive reaction is to remove the old houses or plants that originally existed at that location and create a new design. The Portuguese Sami Architectural Studio designed and built a house on the Portuguese island of Pico – E/C House. However, they broke away from the concept of removing the old and updating. Instead, they retained the existing ruins and combined the old and the new. The combination of the two makes it very unique and makes this building in ruins more mysterious and attractive.
E/C House is a holiday villa on Pico Island. The design concept from the beginning was to enhance the value of the ruins that were originally regarded as ruins, so that new design and construction can complement it. Create conflicts between old and new and new design thinking, adding more possibilities.
In addition to the original gray-black remnants of the walls, the new building is dominated by a natural concrete appearance. The new and old are still very harmonious and do not conflict.
The mysterious beauty of the ruins, seemingly deserted on the outside, but with a warm and bright light inside, makes people curious to find out.
The E/C House is built on a slope, facing the sea and mountains at the back. The island view makes this place a good place for vacation.
Based on the remnant wall, the design process of integrating old and new actually resulted in many restrictions. For example, the remnant wall blocked part of the outward view, and the new building was designed with a large number of windows to allow light to penetrate as much as possible. It also allows you to enjoy the island view outside the building.
New and old complement each other, a surprisingly perfect combination that adds points to each other.
The combination of pure white and raw wood is the same as the appearance of the original color of concrete, giving people the most natural, relaxing and unpretentious feeling of comfort.
The moss growing on the old walls is a trace of time, adding a bit of melancholic beauty.
Looking out from the windows inside the house, the gray and black walls outside not only create a unique style, but also look like a solid fortress surrounding the house.
The admirable design works of the Portuguese Sami Studio make building a house no longer just a matter of cutting it down and rebuilding it. Using different thinking to look at architectural renewal creates new possibilities for everything, and this kind of conflict is so beautiful. , are you also attracted by its mystery?
