While most of us throw away old and broken items, Russian artist Igor Verniy turns scrap metal into stunning animal sculptures in a steampunk style. Covering countless species from birds and mammals to reptiles and insects, Welneys impressive models are hand-assembled from parts from old cars, watches, electronics, and more.
“My love of the natural sciences and engineering, combined with my love of robotics and science fiction, allows me to create something unique and vivid,” says Welney. To bring these two seemingly disparate fields together, Werney studied animal body proportions, behavior and movement. Many of the artists sculptures feature movable parts, such as legs, heads, and wings, which can be placed into realistic poses.
Some of Verneys works are inspired by cultural symbolism. For example, the dove is a universal symbol of peace, while the fish is modeled after Alexander Pushkins paintings and descriptions in his poem "The Story of the Fisherman and the Fish." But no matter what his inspiration, each finished piece showcases the artists incredible talent and passion for his craft.
