Paper-cut works are completed with various decorative patterns. Here is a brief introduction to several commonly used decorative patterns, including ripples, leaf patterns, zigzag patterns, spiral patterns, cloud patterns, swastika patterns, blessing patterns, longevity patterns, etc.
Zigzag pattern: Folk names are Sisi, Maomao, Yaya and Dogyaer. It is a neatly arranged, zigzag-like pattern produced by intersecting straight lines with scissors or a knife, which is called "hairing" in jargon. It uses the changes in the length, curvature, thickness, density, hardness and softness, bluntness and sharpness of the saw teeth, combined with the characteristics of different objects, to express its weight, texture, structure, etc.
Crescent pattern: It is a crescent-shaped arc pattern that can be cut or carved. It can also be divided into thickness, length, straightness, width and length. Its function is the same as zigzag pattern.
Geometric pattern: It is a summary of the shape characteristics of various objects in life, including squares, rectangles, circles, triangles, rhombuses, trapezoids, heart shapes, rings, and polygons, etc. Geometric patterns have rich variations and are widely used. They are especially good at expressing decorative lace and shading, as well as characters’ clothing patterns and auspicious patterns.
Paper-cut patterns can be divided into: auspicious patterns, auspicious birds and monsters, metaphorical legends, ghosts and gods, characters, birds and beasts, songs, proverbs, words, flowers, insects, fish, grass, landscapes, etc.
