Although folk paper-cutting is a long-standing and widespread folk craft, the research and organization of paper-cutting in China started relatively late. After the founding of the Peoples Republic of China, some artists and folklorists also devoted themselves to collecting and studying paper-cutting, but the focus of their research was mostly on the aesthetics or cultural value of paper-cutting.
Due to long-term misunderstandings about the nature and function of folk paper-cutting, as well as the absence and ineffective protection of administrative departments, some folk paper-cuttings are in an endangered state, and discipline construction and talent training are also seriously lagging behind. Folklore scholars focus their research on the image and culture of paper-cutting, but pay less attention to the formation and evolution of paper-cutting craftsmanship, as well as the underlying technical focus.
Although paper-cutting is a folk art form, it is also a handicraft with unique concepts. The concept of this kind of handicraft is not well-known by the world, and there is a lack of systematic organization and exploration. Therefore, paper-cutting is often regarded as a trivial skill, which will hinder its future development.
