Chinese folk paper-cut art is one of the most distinctive folk arts in China. It has a long history and unique style. According to archeology, its history can be traced back to the sixth century AD. During the Tang and Song Dynasties, the custom of "engraving gold for decoration" became popular. "Sheng" is a pattern cut and carved from paper or gold and silver foil, and can be classified into "Fang Sheng", "Hua Sheng", "Ren Sheng" and so on. Li Shangyin, a poet of the Tang Dynasty, said in his poem: "The gold-engraved work spreads the Jing customs, and the ribbon-cutting brings the Jin style to people." It can be seen that the art of paper-cutting was very popular at that time. Folk paper-cut art is the most widely spread art form. It is a product of agricultural civilization and has a distinct cultural character endowed by folk life. This kind of ancient and folk graphic art not only contains the most basic and profound cultural connotation of the Chinese nation, but also contains many Western post-modern design concepts and artistic characteristics.

The history of folk paper-cutting in my country

my countrys folk paper-cutting art can be traced back to 1600 to 1100 BC. "The concubine of the Han Dynasty plays with her baby in front of the window, skillfully cutting tung leaves to shine on the window screen." The use of thin materials to cut and carve patterns was already common before the advent of paper, such as the gold and silver foil carvings of the Han Dynasty. But paper-cutting in the exact sense came after paper existed. The art of paper-cutting, which uses paper to facilitate cutting and carving, meets the needs of folk customs, and subsequently emerged among the people. However, the earliest paper-cut objects discovered so far are five group-flower paper-cuts from the Northern Dynasties (AD 386-581) unearthed near the Flame Mountain in Turpan, Xinjiang. These paper-cuts are very similar to todays folk flower paper-cuts, using repeated folding methods and non-blocking images. Paper-cut objects after the Tang Dynasty are rare. There are leather engraved crowns and stencilled prints to prove it. Industrial paper-cutting and paper-cutting for craft decoration appeared in the Song Dynasty. A common example is the paper-cutting pattern on the porcelain of the Song Dynasty in Jizhou Kiln (refer to the historical tracing of Chinese folk paper-cutting).
