Clay bowl handmade illustrated tutorial

Clay is a highly malleable material. Not only can it be made into a variety of cute animals, plants, and accessories, it can even be easily used to make daily necessities, such as a beautiful clay bowl! Share this simple handmade tutorial with your friends. It can be completed in a while and can be used to place odds and ends or small accessories. If you need it, prepare some clay and follow the steps illustrated below to give it a try!

1. Cut a piece of clay approximately 3 inches x 3 inches and knead it between your palms until soft. If you notice the clay is cracking, lightly moisten your hands before kneading.

2. On a dry, flat surface, use a rolling pin to spread the clay until it is about 1/4 inch thick.

3. Using a bowl or plate as a prop, cut out a circle from the rolled out clay. Smooth any rough edges on the circle.

4. Take the bowl from the previous step and flip it over to reveal the underside. Carefully press the clay onto the bowl, pressing down with your palms so that the clay forms the same shape as the bowl. To get a smooth, round bowl, use the same bowl as in the previous step. If you prefer a more irregular shape, use a slightly smaller bowl than you're used to.

5. Wet your hands again and gently wipe any imperfections on the bowl. The water will help smooth the clay without leaving dents. Set the bowl aside to dry.

6. Let it dry completely.

7. Once completely dry, take an old nail file or emery board and file away any rough edges around the edges of the clay bowl. File in a circular motion to avoid leaving marks. When finished, wipe with a dry cloth.

8. If you want to decorate your bowl, you can do it now. I used a gold paint pen that can be purchased from most craft stores, but basic hand paint will work too - be careful not to use too much water as the clay will absorb it!
