A brief history of glass painting
Stained glass art first developed in Germany in the 9th century and was mainly found in churches. By the 17th century, demand for stained glass increased dramatically, and many Gothic cathedrals employed this art form to illustrate biblical scenes. The original subject matter was abstract and included many pieces of stained glass because the artist lacked the tools necessary to create figurative forms. By the Middle Ages, however, stained glass artists had mastered the craft, and the paintings on windows became larger and more elaborate.
In the 16th century, special enamel pigments gave rise to the type of glass painting we know today. Colors can be mixed and applied like any other paint for increased creativity. Today, artists use glass with themes that go beyond religious symbolism. Contemporary glass painting artists are transforming three-dimensional objects, such as wine glasses and other objects, into beautiful decorative objects in a variety of designs.
