There are more than 28,000 known species of orchids, and their elegant flowers come in a variety of shapes, colors and sizes, making them one of the most popular flowers in the world. It’s no surprise that their beauty inspired British artist Laura Hart. She has crafted a series of luminous orchid sculptures made of glass called Orchis Exotica.
Hart explored many artistic avenues throughout his life, but did not begin experimenting with glass until his fifties. She learned the basics in classes but developed her own style largely through trial and error in the garage. "I've learned a lot, but I'm still a newbie and every day brings another opportunity to look forward to experimentation," Hart said. "I love dabbling in variety and indulging in a myriad of ideas and styles."
Harts Orchid Collection of Artifacts captures delicate forms, bold hues and beautiful orchid patterns in stained glass. Each half-meter-wide piece is produced using a combination of 3D design software and traditional techniques. Each glass flower can truly come to life simply by illuminating it with a two-tone neon light in the center.
Laura Harts Orchis Exotica series of glass sculptures celebrates the diverse beauty of orchid plants.
The neon tube in the center represents the pillars of the flower, which are the important reproductive parts of the flower.
