Pippa Dyrlaga, a paper sculpture artist from Yorkshire, England, is good at transforming paper into various exquisite works inspired by nature. From plants and animals to incredible and surreal designs, everything comes to life because of his skillful hand.
Pippa only started his paper sculpture career in 2010, a year shy of completing his masters degree at Leeds Metropolitan University. When creating, Pippa will first make a rough sketch on the back of the paper, then start carving out the outline with a knife, and finally turn it back to the front, so you can see the true face of the finished product. Pippa usually chooses professional paper that can withstand the complex cutting process for his creations, but recently he has begun to look for other options, such as thin but strong Japanese rice paper, which is one of the options he is considering.
Pippa’s earliest creations were all on white paper. After living in a single pure white world for too long, now he has also begun to try to add blue, gold, and black to his designs to make the visual effects of his works more vivid. Bright, such as bushes and moss with different distances and distinct shades. After being modified with color, it can express a sense of hierarchy.
In his work "Psychopomp", he drew inspiration from Greek mythology and transformed Psychopomp, the messenger responsible for guiding the dead, into a paper sculpture. In the past, Psychopomp was generally depicted in the form of animals, but Pippa chose not to describe this messenger of the underworld in such a simple and direct way, but divided the work into two parts: day and night, life and death, and day in the first half. Featuring organic patterns and plants that represent life and growth, the lower half contains nocturnal creatures and abstract patterns to suggest the abstract concept of death.
Since Pippa’s works became well-known on the Internet, Pippa has also received opportunities to cooperate with well-known brands and companies such as New York University, Japanese paper factories, and blade manufacturer Excel Blades.
