Mongolian boarding school design with long blackboard walls and natural light

In Mongolia, people often live in extreme weather (temperatures between -45 degrees Celsius and 20 degrees Celsius), and 40% of the population are considered nomads, making it almost difficult for local students to stay in them during their studies. next to his family. Therefore, the centralized accommodation and education of young people has become an issue that can be improved. "Building Trust", a non-profit organization dedicated to using design to improve world problems, held the sixth Cool School international competition to gather everyones efforts to improve the education and accommodation problems of young people in Mongolia.

Mongolia is known as the "Land of Endless Blue Skies", and its most abundant resource is sunshine. According to statistics, there are 257 cloudless days in a year. This project was proposed by MUDI Joint Design in Shanghai. The architectural design of 'tsast altai'School is based on this, making extensive use of natural light as a major focus of space and energy use, and using low-cost, locally sourced adobe bricks and polycarbonate glazing as building materials.

In addition to the large amount of natural light, another design focus is the Trombe wall blackboard wall that stretches inside the building. As shown in the picture above, it serves as a planting greenhouse and a library space at the same time, and because of the design of the blackboard wall, it is enough to directly conduct real-time and real teaching interactions on site.

The design of the classroom can also see the use of natural lighting and large blackboard walls. The design of sunlight use also takes into account the sunlight trajectory of the Khovd Province where the building is located, and uses the best projection in conjunction with the design of the thermal shutters of the building. The angle makes full use of sunlight and the heat storage function of Trombe wall to prevent heat loss at night in a low energy consumption way.

In order to create the maximum use of space, MUDI combines all living and space systems as much as possible: the tables used in the classroom are turned upside down and stacked to become single beds with bunk beds; after the space is sorted out, the same place It could be a classroom, recreation room, stadium or canteen.

At night, the stacked desks are used as beds, and the chairs are neatly stored aside. The blackboard wall used for classes during the day has become a place for children to express their creativity and draw and write.

MUDI’s vision also hopes that through the ubiquitous blackboard walls, children who are separated from their families can have the opportunity to write notes and paintings on them, and share them with their families far away through photos, the Internet, etc. at school study and life.
