Renovation design of modern cinema in Madrid slaughterhouse

You can imagine that the place was originally a slaughterhouse. The picture should be full of bloody scenes, full of wailing sounds of animals, and scenes of mourning. This cinema Cineteca Matadero in Madrid was designed by a local architectural firm Churtichaga + Quadra-Salcedo transformation. The slaughterhouse was built in the early 20th century and has been used for livestock trading and other businesses for more than 85 years. However, it has been renovated to echo the inherent black mysterious tension of the original slaughterhouse. The line was planned into two screenings. hall, a production room, offices and archive storage rooms.

Like a basket that glows orange, it is about three stories high. It stands in a place surrounded by black background walls. It is surrounded by places where files are placed. Wooden gray-black wooden strips are arranged in the light. The outside area is covered with ceilings, floors and even walls. The arrangement of woven wooden strips expresses a strong meaning of baskets. It frames not only the interweaving of old memories and contemporary scenes, but also a kind of darkness. Unknown cryptic metaphor. The lighting setting is mainly gray, and the backlight design is intertwined with irregular weaving shapes, with a spiral circuitous and repetitive flickering. When the lights are turned on, it represents the image journey of the movie. It is about to begin, and when the lights go out, it means that the journey may have come to an end; isn’t it a clear gap between history and reality?

In the bottom area, gentle orange-colored rubber tubes are also placed side by side, blocking the LED light and allowing passers-by to peek at a slit of light. They can walk here or pause to admire it. In addition, in the screening room, there is also a large gray-black wall with a low-curved projection screen in the middle. The small windows standing next to it are also like the occasional glimpse of the afterglow in a traditional cinema, which is clearly visible through the eyes. Opening and closing, and tactile perception, we feel like we are experiencing a real journey of exploration. What we are exploring may be the past or the future. History has always been the protagonist in the movie. The only difference is that the focus is on a period of history. Even if It’s the moment you are reading. After the next second, doesn’t the previous second count as history?

Many times, when we only care about the things at hand, relatively speaking, maybe some part of the existence is consciously ignored by us, but the renovation of this historical building gives us an opportunity to think again. If we cannot remember the past tense through the traditional method of "preserving the existing", we may have other ways to trace the historical significance of a certain part, which may be preserved in different forms.Preserving and fulfilling the responsibilities of future generations, leaving everyone behind, contains a stereotyped framework for future descendants, but is rich in historical space for different interpretation modes.
