How to graft trees using branch grafting
1Select the plant species and rootstock you want to graft. In order to successfully graft, you must cut a scion (a small piece, used for grafting) from a healthy, disease-free plant species (the source tree) and a suitable growing tree (the rootstock). - The branch grafting method can only be used on rootstocks and scions of the same diameter, and the diameter must be between 0.6-1.3 cm.
- Grafting must be started after the threat of severe cold has passed, but also before the bark of the trunk begins to slide (easily falls off).
- The scion must be in the dormant stage (not sprouted) and should be a 0.3 meter long branch with three to five buds on it.

4Make a tongue-shaped incision. Cut tongue-shaped wedges in the cut surfaces of the stock and scion so that they match up in such a way that they can hook onto each other.
5Use scion. Place the scion slightly offset from the stock and slide it down so that the two overlap. Make sure the green layers under the bark of both trees are aligned, otherwise the graft will not succeed.
6Fix the scion. Wrap a stretchy rubber material around the rootstock to hold the buds in place. Grafting tape works great. If a different material is used, make sure it is removed within a month.
7Take care of the grafted branches. Remove everything growing under the grafted branch, except for the small leaves, which can be left in place until the grafted branch can successfully absorb the nutrients delivered to the tree.

DIY Tips
- T-budding is the simplest and most common method, but inverted T-budding (completely reversing the process) can make the tree grow stronger. Bud grafting is the most difficult, but it is the grafting method that yields the best yield.
- Use aluminum tags to mark different varieties, or grafted varieties. This method is particularly useful if you are transplanting more than one variety.
- Use a very sharp tool to cut cleanly and wash with alcohol to remove bacteria before use.
- In temperate climates, fruit, nut, and avocado trees can be grafted in the spring, from bud to bloom. You can also graft citrus in the fall.
- Protect the grafted area from sunlight as much as possible.

- Make sure your tree can survive the environment in which you live.
