How to grow garlic
- 1Look for garlic seedlings. Of course you can buy ready-made garlic in the grocery store and plant it, but a better way is to go to a nursery to find garlic seeds that grow well locally and buy garlic cloves or seeds. Of course, online shopping has a wider range of choices, just choose one you like. Some varieties are resistant to stress, while others are more tolerant of cold.
- The garlic sold in grocery stores is usually shipped from far away, so it may not be suitable for the climate and soil where you live.
- Grocery stores often use chemicals to keep garlic fresh, and growing treated garlic is more difficult than natural garlic.
- 2Plant in autumn or spring. If you live in a northern area where there are severe frosts, it is best to start planting in the fall. Because this allows the garlic to survive the winter better, the garlic bulbs that grow are larger and more fragrant and delicious than garlic planted in spring. If you live in the south and don't have cold winters, plant in early spring.
- If you decide to plant in the fall, start six to eight weeks before frost sets on the ground.
- If you plan to plant in the spring, start as early as February or March.
- 3Choose a good planting location. Choose a place with plenty of sunshine and smooth soil drainage. Use a garden rake or hoe to dig a 10 cm deep hole, and then rub the compost into the soil to make the garlic seedlings grow stronger and healthier.
- If you want to plant in a pot, choose one that is wide and deep and fill it with rich potting soil.
- 4Plant garlic cloves. Break the garlic ball into pieces, being careful not to damage the paper-like skin on the surface of the garlic. Plant garlic cloves 10 cm (4 inches) apart and 5 cm (2 inches) deep. Make sure the flat root is facing down and the pointed side is facing up, otherwise the garlic seedlings will be planted upside down. Bury the garlic cloves and pat them lightly with soil.
