How to grow onions from seeds or bulbs
- 1Select the type of onions you want to plant. Sonions or shallots are green seedlings that appear before onions form. They are extremely immature green onions. Look for heart-shaped shallot seeds, such as shallots, or simply choose your favorite white, red or yellow shallot to grow.
- If you don’t want to start from seed, choose red, white or green bulbs, which look like mini onions with bare roots and are tied together with twine or rubber bands. You can select some bulbs to plant as green onions and allow others to develop into green onions.
- 2Prepare the planting bed. Choose an area in your yard or garden that will get full sun and good drainage. Dig the soil to a depth of 30cm and add compost, blood meal or other organic matter to enrich the soil with nutrients. This will allow the green onions to grow strong and healthy and continue to emerge throughout the growing season.
- Make sure rocks, branches and weeds are cleared before digging and applying fertilizer.
- If the space is small, use a garden shovel to dig the soil. If you have a larger location, buying or renting a soil tiller will make the job easier.
- IfIf you just want to grow a few green onions, prepare a pot with rich humus potting soil instead of planting them in the ground.
- 3Plant seeds or bulbs. Once the soil is prepared, about four weeks before the last frost, you can plant the seeds or bulbs. If it is seeds, the sowing depth is 1.3 cm, and the distance between rows is about 30 cm. In the case of bulbs, punch the roots down at a distance of 5 cm from each other, to a depth of 2.5 cm, and 30 cm between rows. Planting beds should be well watered.
- Seeds will germinate when the soil temperature reaches 18 to 30°C. It takes 1 month from planting to germination.
- If the weather is cold where you live and spring comes late, plant seeds indoors 8 weeks before the last frost. Plant the seeds in peat pots for germination and make sure they are well watered. Place them in a warm sunny room during the germination period. When the soil outside is warm enough, transplant the seedlings into the garden or into a large pot.
- 4Thinning if necessary. When the seedlings begin to emerge, decide whether to thin them out to give them more space. Onions grow well in clusters, but for optimal results, mature onions should be spaced 5-7.5 cm apart. Look at your garden beds and pull out weak seedlings if necessary.
- 5Place mulch between seedlings. Cover the soil around the seedlings with grass clippings, pine needles or bark. This prevents weeds from growing and keeps the soil moist evenly.
- If you grow onions in a pot, you can jumpGo through this step because you don't have to worry about weeds and its easier to control soil moisture.
- 6Water well. Green onions require soil with balanced moisture throughout the growing season. Water the onions about 2.5 cm deep every week. For optimal plant growth, the soil does not need to contain a lot of water, but it should be moist.
- Another way to test whether to water is to test soil conditions. Insert your fingers into the soil close to the plant, to the second knuckle. If you feel the soil is dry, water it. If you feel the soil is moist enough not to need watering, repeat the test in a few days. If its rained where you've been recently, you probably don't need to water.
- 7Harvest the onions when they are mature. After 3-4 weeks, the green onions will grow to 15-20 cm, and they are ready to eat. When harvesting, pull out the whole onion plant. At this point the plant has not yet formed onions. Both green and white parts are edible.
- If you want some green onions to mature to a storable state, leave them in the soil. Onions will form on the base of the plant and can be harvested in the fall.
- If you only want to use the green part of the onion and don’t need the white part near the root, you can use scissors to cut off the green tops. Leave 2.5-5 cm to continue growing. The green onions will continue to grow and they can be harvested when they reach 15-20 cm in length. Remember that as plants mature, their flavor becomes more pungent.

- You can plant seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the growing season begins and then transplant them outside into soil. If you don't want to start from seed, you can purchase green onions from a nursery that are already growing.
- IfIf onions are grown in containers, water more frequently because the soil dries out faster.
- Onions should be planted in full sun. If possible, keep soil pH between 6 and 7.5. This is the most suitable condition for the growth of onions.
- When you use onions, leave 2.5 cm above the base for replanting. Replanting will give you a steady yield of green onions this season.
