In recent months, I came into contact with handmade leather by chance. The more I studied, the more interested I became...
After posting a work yesterday, I have been curious about one thing, that is, how long does it take to create the most satisfactory work?
When the leather teacher was here The production time stated on the website is 6 hours, but this is my first time to do it, because I decided to make it for my girlfriend as a Valentines Daygift, so I made it in a hurry, but it also took me about four days. I made another one this time, but it took about a week intermittently. The actual production I don’t know the time, so can it be completed in about 6 hours?
I am very curious, so I decided to make the short wallet next. I want to record the process and the approximate time it took, and share some production experience and knowledge about handmade leather, which can be regarded as a summary of this stage of my life.
Because this is just an article recording the process, not a complete tutorial
And this By documenting the process, I also want those who think "Why are handmade goods to be as expensive as famous brands" to know what the value of handmade leather goods is? I think this should also be of great value.
Okay, let’s start
Part 1 Leather pattern and cutting
< p style="text-align:center">This was given to my dad as a Fathers Day gift this year. It took several days to do it. It took me a long time just to wax the edges.
I won’t skip the process of making the paper pattern. It takes about half an hour, depending on the layout
Paper pattern cutting After that, it’s the first step
Drawing and pattern:
Follow me first It was made differently this time. The short clip I gave to my dad was made of black Italian cowhide. This time I used original color cowhide, which is also made in Italy.
My leather teacher often says that those who really know how to play with handmade leather tend to play with primary color leather, because primary color leather will change color. The longer you use it and the longer it is exposed to the sun, he will It slowly turns into a caramel color, just like how it turns dark when exposed to the sun too much. As for the reason for the discoloration, I have to check again. It seems to be related to the oil content of the leather.
But it doesn’t matter, this discoloration process is very charming.
OK, after spreading the leather on the table, lay out the paper shape a little bit The position determines the part you want to cut. Generally, cowhide will have better parts (such as the square leather on the back) and worse parts (such as the leather near the neck, which has a lot of wrinkles), and there may also be spots. , scars, mosquito bite marks, etc., not every part is so pretty.
But that doesn’t mean that the parts with scars cannot be used, but we will try our best to hide them out of sight to maintain the beauty of the appearance. I The piece of leather I bought is very beautiful, and about 80% of it has no scars or wrinkles. As for, is there any kind that has no scars at all? It is said that there is, but it is very expensive...
After deciding on the part, place the paper shape on the leather, pin it with a pin, and then use a silver pen to draw directly on the surface of the leather (called the leather surface).
As for whether it is possible to use a ball pen? Yes, it is possible, but it is not recommended.
After drawing, I usually see other teachers who share making leather goods on the Internet. It seems that most of them do not mention positioning holes to facilitate the alignment of the glued leather. My teacher will draw this thing when making patterns, so after I finish drawing this part, I will use a cone to mark the position of the positioning hole.
This is the scar on the leather, I hid it in the middle of the sandwich, hey!
OK, once you've finished drawing, just cut it roughly from the top of the entire piece of leather.
It takes about 32 minutes and 41 seconds to draw the outline
Part 2 Leather treatment
Apply horn oil:
After the leather is cut, start processing the leather and start applying horn oil.
The function of horn oil is to replenish the oil content of the leather and maintain the softness of the leather. However, if the leather is too soft, it will not be easy to handle, so horn oil is used Just apply a thin layer.
If you buy a large bottle of horn oil, it is best to divide it into small bottles. The yellow liquid is horn oil.
You can use cotton cloth, non-woven fabric, or old clothes to apply horn oil.
Slightly fold the cotton cloth into This size (easier to hold), then dip it in a little cows foot oil.
It is best to use a "circle" method to wipe. Remember not to just apply it wherever you find it. Divide it into several areas and do not repeat the wiped areas. Wipe it so you don’t waste it (cow’s foot oil isn’t cheap either).
Just wipe the area you drew.
Try not to wipe into the middle part of each area. You have to cut off that part, and it is a waste to wipe it.
