Today I'm going to show you how to make a fabric cover for your phone, laptop, or tablet. Its perfect for protecting your electronics from scratches from other items in your suitcase or bag.
Once you learn how to make it, its easy to make other styles on your sewing machine. Now think about the electronic products you want to protect, and let’s take action!~
Materials:
1/2 yard quilted cotton
1/2 yard quilted cotton lining
4-inch round elastic cord (black or white)
Sewing to match the fabric
Buttons to match the fabric
Tools:
Sewing needle
Sewing needle
Tape measure
Sewing ruler
Scissors
Lace scissors
Water erasable pen
Irons and ironing boards
Crochet or knitting needle
1. Here we take making a mobile phone case as an example and place it horizontally for the most accurate measurement.
This is probably the easiest of the several types of fabric covers for electronics.
2. Use a tape measure to measure the watch case vertically and horizontally as shown in the picture. Be careful to consider the thickness of the phone.
3. If you are not sure about the numbers, it is best to add 1/2 inch to the length and width.
4. Once you have determined the size, lay the fabric flat so that it does not have any obvious wrinkles. Then, draw out the pattern and cut it out.
You will need one pair of fabric pieces for the lining, and another pair of fabric for the cover.
5. Pin the patterned fabric pieces together, the side facing inward is the outer side you ultimately want.
For solid color fabrics, you don’t have to worry about this at all.
6. When I'm preparing to hand sew, I like to pin vertically along the seam, which holds the fabric more firmly so its easier to hold and sew.
7. We will use a 1/4 inch seam allowance. When sewing a straight line and want to be super precise, I like to mark my sewing lines with a water-disposable pen. This will teach you to sew in a straight line, so I recommend you do the same!
Mark the bottom and sides, we will not sew the top edge.
8. Use double thread needle and knotted thread. Starting at the top left or right corner, bring the needle through the fabric from back to front and sew. Make another stitch in the same spot, but further to the seam allowance, locking your stitches in place!
Since we will be turning these pieces right side out after sewing, the seams need to be very strong.
9. Now you can start backstitching. Keep the stitches as small and even in size as possible.
10. By holding the fabric between my fingers, I can tighten it for easier sewing. If you don't hand sew regularly, this position may tire your hands quickly.
11. At the corners, keep the suture line at a 90-degree angle.
12. The two sides and the bottom three sides are sewn together.
13.This is the back of the lining.
14. Follow the same method and sew the other pair of fabric pieces.
Important: If you have used a hydrophilic pen in any location, you will need to clean it first and then allow the fabric to dry before ironing. Otherwise, the mark will be permanent!
15. Let’s cut off the bottom corners! Use your tailor’s scissors and cut off each bottom corner as shown. This will make the corners beautiful.
16. Now, use lace scissors to cut the sides as well.
17. Both are cut.
18. Turn the outer fabric inside out. Move gently, even whenThere are additional reinforced stitches at the top of the seams, which may still be torn if applied too much force.
19. After turning the outer layer right side out, insert it into the lining. If the case is too small for my hand to fit in, I like to use the eraser end of a pencil to push the outer layer into the lining.
20.This is what it will look like when you're done.
21. Next mark the stitching on the top of the case. A 1/4 inch seam allowance is used here too, use a sewing machine to make sure the seams are in the right place.
Align the seams on both sides of the casing and pin them about 1/2 inch from the top. You will need four pins, two on each side seam, they will keep the seam from moving while sewing.
22. On one side of the top, insert two vertically at a distance of about 2-3 inch pins. Now we'll do the other side.
23. Cut a 4-inch length of round elastic cord and place it in the middle of the other side of the opening, between the outer fabric and lining.
24. Carefully secure the elastic cord in place horizontally, with the top meeting the top of the case. Make sure the top of the lining and cover fabric are aligned.
25. Let’s start sewing! Will be using a 1/4 inch seam allowance here as well. Mark your sewing lines as before.
26. Just like we did before, make two small stitches at the beginning of the seam. Remember to pull out the needle while sewing!
27. When you get to the side seams, be sure to sew them together so they lay flat. The orientation is not important, but it is important that they are nice and flat so there is not a huge gap margin.
28. When you reach the elastic, make lots of tiny stitches on each half of the elastic cord. Wrap the thread all the way around the elastic.
You need to make sure the elastic cord stays in place, so pull the end of it to test when you're done.
29. Remove any stitches left in the fabric.
30.This is what it will look like in the end.
Important: If you mark any sewing thread, be sure to remove it with cold water before continuing.
31. Cut the elastic band in half.
32. Pull out the outer fabric first. Grasp the outer fabric with your fingers (or a pair of tweezers) and start pulling on it. Gently pull it out through the opening bit by bit.
33. Now, we need to flip the lining fabric. I like to push one of the top corners into the opening to get a head start!
34. After flipping the lining over, insert a pencil or chopstick into the opening to push out the corners of the outer layer and lining.
35. Now, with the case open and laying flat, we will press to flatten the outside and lining.
36. Now tuck the lining into the shell.
37. We will sew up the opening!
38. Using a slip stitch wherever needed, sew the seam cleanly from the outside. Start by tidying up the edges of the opening so that both the lining and outer layers are straight and aligned.
39. Insert the needle under one of the folded edges of the opening so that it sticks out from the top fold of the opening. This is the trickiest part of slip stitching.
40. Pass the needle through the top edge, the seam should be about 1/8 inch.
41. This is what the thread looks like.
42. Sew the next stitch in the same way!
43. Continue to sew the other side. When you reach the end of the stitch, insert the needle into either side of the opening, just at the top edge.
44. Knotting.
45. Start installing buttons. Bend the loop over the top of the case without stretching. Use a water-erasable pen to mark just above the very bottom of the elastic ring.
46. Sew buttons on the marked places.
47. Put the mobile phone in and fasten the ring to provide good protection.
48. Choosing buttons of different colors can also make a more personalized mobile phone case~
