Artist Jake Henzler creates whimsical knitted art inspired by Copenhagen’s colorful traditional architecture. He began the project while living in the Danish capital, creating a unique blanket inspired by the rainbow mosaics of the cityscape.
The Australian artist positioned each "block" of the large rug in a different part of the city. To make them suitable for weaving, Henzler simplified traditional architectural styles into geometric forms to capture the essence of Danish charm. After the weaving is complete, he organizes them into a grid and sews them together. Square windows, tall doors and ornate wooden roofs tie the woven mosaic together, while subtle color variations highlight each buildings personality. While some bricks appear more minimalist in detail and color palette, others feature whimsical floral patterns on the facades and intricate roofs.
Since creating his checkered blanket, Henzler has applied graphic design to other knitted arts, such as pillows and baby blankets. Henzlers works look fairytale-like, and when placed in a line, the small houses transform into quaint Danish streets.
