Repair your own trousers: How to change the length and width of your trousers

Online shopping is now popular. What should you do if the newly purchased pants online have problems with their length or tightness? It is not like having on-site pants repair services in shopping malls. You have no choice but to send it back and let the seller make it difficult for you. Besides, online shopping is meant to be convenient and cheap. It’s so annoying to have to deal with it like this. So let’s learn how to modify the length and width of pants.

Repair your own trousers: How to change the length and width of your trousers

Method A for shortening pants: (Applicable to jeans and casual pants)

1) Measure the required length of the trousers, draw a marking line on the trouser leg, and draw a second marking line 3 cm below it.

2) Cut off the excess pants along the second marked line.

3) Fold the trouser leg inward by 1.5cm, and then fold it inward by 1.5cm again to form a three-fold hem.

4) In order to prevent the hem from twisting and shifting during sewing, you can use bead stitching or false stitching to fix it.

5) Use a sewing machine to sew a circle 0.2 cm away from the edge of the trouser leg and complete.

Method B for shortening trousers: (applicable to trousers)

1) Draw a marking line at the desired length of the pants, and draw a second marking line 5 cm below it.

2) Cut off the excess pants along the second marked line.

3) Use the curved stitch method to overlock the trouser legs.

4) Fold the trouser legs inwards by 5 cm and fix the false seams.

5) Use the hidden needle sewing method (the seams will not be visible on the surface of the pants after sewing) and sew a circle by hand and remove the false seams.

Pants lengthened:

Use a seam remover to remove the seams from the trouser legs, then re-fold, iron and hem the trouser legs according to the new trouser length.

Narrow pants:

1) Remove the seams at the bottom of the trouser legs and iron the wrinkles out with an iron.

2) Use a pen to draw modification lines next to the side seams of the trouser legs.

3) Sew along the modified line and iron it flat.

4) Leave a 0.3cm seam allowance and cut off the excess (the seam allowance processing method here is for reference only, please follow the original processing method of the pants).

5) Finally, lift up the hem of your pants. Please refer to the previous method of shortening your pants.

Changing the width of pants:

The side seams of trousers are narrow, and the trousers can only be widened by 1 to 2 cm. In addition, the previous stitches will be exposed after widening, so it is not recommended to make the trousers wider. If you have to change the width, you can remove the side seams, and then splice a narrow strip of fabric on each of the two trouser legs. After this change, the trousers will present an alternative patchwork style.
