When Polish animator Mateusz Urbanowicz moved to Tokyo in 2014, he began depicting some of his favorite storefronts with colorful watercolor illustrations. Thereafter, while still passionate about urban landscapes, he took his painting in a different direction. Urbanowiczs series "New Storefronts" depicts imaginary Japanese storefronts inspired by retro architectural styles.
Each building in New Storefronts was modeled based on tips given by Urbanowiczs fans on his popular YouTube channel, including a florist, bakery, art supply store, and photography shop. Although each work is unique, they all share Urbanowiczs candy-colored palette and captivating lines.
At first glance, it’s hard to believe that these vibrant buildings are entirely a figment of the imagination. Urbanowicz imbues his paintings with many thoughtful details that make them look like real places. “I’ve always tried to aim for storytelling, narrative,” he said. "Even if there are no people in the scene I create, there has to be more substance and depth, so its not just a pretty picture." This illustrates the larger idea behind his work. "I'm fascinated by architecture and, in general, people by the things and places they use." .
