Sometimes, the artwork we see looks so realistic, its hard to believe our eyes. Such is the case with the impressive portfolio of portrait painter Stefan Pabst. This artist from Germany creates stunning 3D paintings that seem to jump off the page.
From Darth Vader to a hairy tarantula to a glass of water, Pabsts mastery of technique makes his subjects appear to be mere inches away from the paintbrush. To this end, Pabst not only renders the characters in perfect detail, but also adds purposeful shadows and highlights to create a three-dimensional feel. Then, to complete the illusion, the painter uses his hands and brush as "real" shadows, blended with the painted shadows.
Additionally, what makes many of Pabsts 3D themes so eye-catching is that they appear to extend beyond the edges of the canvas. The artist does this through some clever tricks. Pabst often places other objects in the frame of the photo to confuse the viewer as to what is drawn and what is not.
