Life on the open road is tempting to many of us. Tyler Hjorting and Lexi O'Brien were a couple who ultimately decided to leave California because they thought the rent there was too high. and transitioning to nomadic life on a full-time basis in a converted school bus.
Hjorting and O'Brien call their school bus "One Wild Ride," and their refurbished vehicle is as comfortable as any tiny house. Featuring wood floors and paneling on the walls and ceiling, this aesthetic has a chic country feel. Add to that the white cabinets, sunset colors, and lots of plants, and its hard to believe that this vehicle was once used to transport large numbers of people every day.
Having had the idea for "One Wild Ride" for nearly two years, the couple decided to adopt a nomadic lifestyle. They spent a year researching and finding the right bus. After purchasing the bus on Craigslist, work on the renovation began. "Using it after get off work and on weekends, we renovated the bus in less than eight months," they said. As well as style, a few other essentials in the interior design were included. "We made sure to include a few essentials in our RV, including a refrigerator, queen-size bed, and a dinette."
Since starting their adventure, the couple has purchased land and made stops in Texas, where they are building a cabin called The Pond Collective and working on other projects, including manufacturing Ice Factory Venue.
InterestedConverting your own RV? Hjorting and O'Brien have some suggestions. "If we had to give advice to anyone considering a school bus retrofit, it would be to spend the money on a good solar system and power supply." And, don't be afraid of small spaces. "Another thing we realized in just a few months of traveling is that we could have taken a smaller bus!"
Tyler Hjorting and Lexi O'Brien transformed an ordinary school bus into a comfortable and stylish RV.
