Method/Steps
- 1Find a sturdy hard Paper tubes (cardboard tubes for mailing are most suitable). The cardboard tube needs to be 3.5 to 5 feet (91.4 cm to 1.5 meters) long, similar to the length of a wrapping paper roll.
- 2Buy a big bag of nails. The length of the nail should be slightly shorter than the diameter of the cardboard tube. You'll need a lot of nails because you'll need to nail the entire tube in a spiral pattern from top to bottom.
- Don’t make the nail too long, otherwise the other end will be nailed through. Not too short.
- 3Buy a small package of dried beans . Beans similar in size to mung beans, northern soybeans, green beans, etc. can be used.
- 4Along the cardboard tube wall Nails are driven into the spiral seam from the outside in and from the top down. If your cardboard tube doesn't have a seam, you can draw one before you start nailing.
- Don’t nail directly to the seam, nail it a little above or below the seam.
- If you need a hammer to drive the nail in, use a rubber mallet and don't hit it too hard.
- 5Put one end of the cardboard tube seal. You can use a cardboard tube with a sealed end, or seal one end with tape so that the beans won't leak out when you put them in.
- 6Pour into the cardboard tube Add 1/3~1/2 pound (150g~226g) of beans. You can use a funnel to help you pour it in, which will make it easier and less likely to spill out.
- 7 Seal the other end of the cardboard tube as mentioned above.
- 8Pour the beans from one end to another side. Listen to the sound inside, and if the desired effect is not achieved, increase or decrease the number of beans inside.
- 9Decorated rain stick. Children will be more happy to play with the rain-praying sticks if they are beautifully decorated. If this is going to be used at a performance, be sure to decorate it in a way that matches the other instruments.
Tips
- If you want to make slight changes to the sound, you can replace some of the beans with rice grains.
- The number of beans depends on the length of the cardboard tube. Just prepare enough beans to make sure you make a rain wand that makes the sound you want.
Notes
- You will sometimes need to wrap the tip of the nail with tape and always keep it inside the rain wand to prevent safety hazards.
