We all know that the best part about hot weather is being able to spend more time at home with family. This playful watermelon-themed mason jar is perfect for preserving summer cocktails and makes an impromptu barbecue or picnic more fun. These jars are endless and can be used to hold party favors, silverware or for pre-mixed cocktails or mocktails. After all, watermelon is the most popular and iconic fruit of summer, so why not use it as part of your party theme?
While this is not the only way to utilize glass bottles, this method will yield the best results. While you can use craft paint instead of spray paint, it can be difficult to paint without leaving streaks. Spray painting can make the surface smoother and more durable.
The following materials are what we used for this particular look. The primer layer also helps the paint adhere to the glass better and hold on longer when the jar gets wet.
What you need:
Equipment/Tools:
Scissors
Ingredients:
Glass Mason Jar
Tape
Spray primer (optional)
Spray paint
Black oil-based marker
1. Paste tape
There is more than one way to create a watermelon design in a glass bottle. The two most popular methods are: paint the bottom of the jar green or paint the lid green.
We decided to paint the lid green and the entire body of the jar pink.
Warning
Do not spray paint on the mouth of the jar as this may cause unsafe conditions.
2. If you choose to spray primer
Many people don’t understand why primer is needed. Yes, this is an extra step. Primer makes the paint adhere to the glass better. Exposure to water or condensation can make these glasses prone to chipping or peeling without primer. Even with primer, we do not recommend submerging the jar in water or putting it in the dishwasher.
In a well-ventilated area, carefully spray paint the jar and lid until they are covered with an even coat of primer, then allow to dry completely.
3. Spray paint lids and cans
Spray the can with pretty pink paint (you can even find watermelon-colored spray paint) evenly over the can again in a well-ventilated space, keeping the spray far enough away from the can so the paint doesn't drip. Follow the directions on the spray paint for best results. The lid (painted green) is going to be a little tricky because of the shape. Work slowly and carefully, waiting for the part to dry if necessary, then flip and finish painting. If needed, add another coat to each layer.
4. Paint and enjoy!
To be safe, let the jars dry for at least half a day. Once the jar is completely dry, use a marker to draw some black watermelon seeds. If you're worried about screwing up at this final stage, you can use duct tape to create a template for yourself. Until you are happy with how the entire jar looks. You can also draw them freehand with a marker.
If you don't like watermelon, you can use the same technique, but just switch the colors used to represent your favorite fruit or vegetable~
