While most of us discard old car parts and unused utensils in the junkyard, Aloha, Oregon-based artist Brian Mock turns scrap metal into fantastic outdoor sculptures. He collects used discarded materials (such as screws, nuts and bolts) and assembles them into human and animal figures.
Mock began exploring many artistic practices as a child, but discovered his love for upcycled art in the 1990s. He learned how to weld, allowing him to visualize his artistic ideas into metal sculptures. Now he is using 100% recycled materials to create a menagerie of metal animals, including dogs, cats and lions. Mock carefully selects each piece of scrap metal to fit the shape of its subject—the dogs tail is fashioned into a flexible metal chain, while the floppy ears are made from chunks of bent steel.
“As a sculpture, giving new life to old everyday objects is an artistically demanding but satisfying process,” says Mock. “My work encourages audience participation and the audience’s response inspires inspired my creativity and helped me turn my vision into reality."
