The following is a DIY method to renovate old chairs to make them fashionable and beautiful again.
Materials for DIY renovation of old chairs:
Wooden dining chairs
Steel wool brush (except paint grade) or sandpaper
Waste clothes
Gloves
Masks and goggles
Spray primer
3 colors of spray paint (I chose glossy white, blue and dark blue.)
Spray clear topcoat (gloss)
Optional: wooden frame, electric sand grinder
Steps to DIY renovation of old chairs:
Step one: wear gloves. Start sanding your chair with a steel wool brush, aiming to remove loose paint and stains that tend to flake off. The wire brush seems to be very soft, but after working for a long time, you will find falling debris, which can hurt your hands, so it is best to wear thick labor protection gloves. This process will be more laborious, but you must complete it carefully. This foundation will affect the beauty of the paint. If you have an electric sander, that will go a lot faster.
Step 2: Spray primer. Carefully spray the chair all over with a thin coat of primer. You can spray one part first, then turn it over and spray the other part when dry, making sure not to miss any nooks and crannies. Primer is very important. It’s best to reapply every few minutes. You can read the instructions on the bottle. Be sure to wear a mask and goggles and work in a well-ventilated area.
Step 3: Spray color. After your primer has dried (I waited about 25 minutes until it was no longer sticky), you can start applying color. You need to have an idea and plan in advance before you start. You can also practice spraying paint evenly on cardboard. Remember! Be sure to spray in thin layers, as if you were drawing a sketch. Don't spray too hard all at once. This will affect the next coloring.
If you want to get drips or a weird texture, just lightly smooth your steel wool out and spray it again.
Step 4: Make gradient. After many thin coats, you should have a color you like. After drying, you can change to another color at this time, and follow the same method just now. Spray it very thinly each time, and then layer it little by little. The gradient produced in this way will be smooth and natural. Some fixed color parts can be covered with cloth to prevent them from being covered by other colors. You can also do some detail work, such as spraying some white paint on the blue chair legs, which will give it a faded look.
Step five. Varnish fixed. After more than 24 hours of thorough drying. You can apply varnish, which is transparent and can make the surface of the chair smooth and beautiful. Then wait until it is completely dry and your work is complete.
