Today I will share with you a tutorial on how to sharpen a leather cutting knife. I heard many leather friends say that they don’t know how to sharpen leather cutting knives, so I made a tutorial like this. My personal summary. If there is anything wrong, please feel free to discuss it. This method is relatively simple, low-cost and low-difficulty, but it is only suitable for cutting knives with intact blades. If there are gaps, you still need to use a whetstone to sharpen them step by step
How to sharpen a leather knife:
1. Look at the sharpness or degree of wear of the blade and how much grit of sandpaper you need to start polishing
2. I personally recommend the German Warrior brand sandpaper
3. The parameters are 400 600 800 1000 2000 3000 5000 7000
4. You can reduce a portion appropriately, such as 800 3000.
5. Polishing method: Use a glue bottle to draw a line (machine oil or water) on the sandpaper. Do not use too much and pull it down along the angle with the blade (do not push), 5 Don't use too much force until 6 times (see if there are white lines on the cutting edge at 400 mesh, and if so, polish until there is no white line). Generally, there will be no white lines. Go to 7000 mesh in order.
6. Below is the sharpening paste. Drop machine oil on the back of the cowhide, apply the sharpening paste, and stick it on a wooden board, or place it on a flat surface such as glass. , the polishing method is the same as sandpaper. One more time on the back of the blade, and the first 5-6 times in reverse order, all using pulling. This process can be repeated 2-3 times (it mainly depends on whether it is ground in place)
7. Finally, just run the knife back and forth on the cowhide or jeans a few times. Cutting paper is very easy, and the razor blade is sharp enough to be used. This is a cost-saving, time-saving and low-difficulty method that I summarized during my own knife sharpening process. I hope it can help leather friends. Masters, please stop complaining. Welcome everyone to exchange and discuss.
8. For general use, you can skip steps 1-5 and start from step 6. Use appropriate force and a steady hand. This method is also applicable to thinning knives.
Done.
