The ancient decorative art of paper quilling transforms strips of paper into beautiful three-dimensional designs. Now, contemporary artists are exploring further possibilities of this traditional craft, including realistic animal portraits and Impressionist-style works. Paper-quilling artist Vesna Rikic uses meticulous techniques to craft large volumes of colored paper into ambitious designs that are full of energy.
Since she was a child, she has lived in Bosnia and practiced various forms of paper art, such as origami and decoupage. When Rikic discovered paper quilling art, she was amazed by the extraordinary visual impact it produced. “The pictures I create are entirely of my choice, and in them you can identify the things I love most,” she explains. “Sometimes, when I like some painting, I reproduce it using the quill method. ”
Depending on the complexity of the design, each piece may take days or even weeks to complete. For example, Rikics quilling paper restoration of Van Goghs "Starry Night" requires a large amount of quilling paper to replicate the night sky. Likewise, her intricate world map took nearly a month to complete. However, the results are well worth it as each piece looks as gorgeous as a painting.
