How to make a fabric book cover
You can use a piece of fabric left over from a sewing project, or fabric that you happened to have purchased that you particularly like. Either way, making books out of fabric is a great way to preserve them efficiently.
- 1Select fabric. The fabric needs to provide adequate protection for the book, so avoid making it too thin. Of course, some light fabric is also needed for connection.
- 2Pressed fabric. Keep fabrics smooth and wrinkle-free to make work go more smoothly.
- 3Measure the book cover. Place the fabric face down on a flat work surface. Place the book face down in the middle of the fabric.
- Along the top and bottom edges of the bookDraw two horizontal lines through the fabric. Extend the edges beyond each side of the book to provide the appropriate package size. For a standard size book, it will need to be approximately 6cm wide.
- Leave smaller dimensions above and below the horizontal line.
- 4Move the book. Cut the fabric to the new measurements.
- 5The reverse interface of the molten fabric. This is also the side of the fabric that faces the book.
- 6Place the book face down on the seamed side of the fabric.
- Open the front cover of the book. Fold the left edge of the fabric in and pin it in place.
- Open the back cover of the book. Fold the right edge of the fabric in and pin in place.
- 7Take down the book.
- Fold the remaining left edge across the horizontal line and pin in place.
- Using a thimble, sew from the top of the fabric to the bottom.
- When sewing, pay more attention to the sides or pouches and try to keep them intact.
- 8 Move the book into the book cover. Its now ready for everyday wear and tear!

DIY Tips
- For a friend who loves books, a book cover would make a beautiful and thoughtful gift.
- If you like to use tape for crafts, you can also use it to make a book cover. See also: How to use tape to make a book cover.
- Before using the fabric as a bookmark, you can embroider it. You can sew on favorite icons, animals, plants, names, or any other desired items. You need to determine the center of the book cover to sew in the correct position. You should sew after you have measured and cut, but not sewn onto the fabric that is on the sides of the book. If interfacing is used, embroidery should precede the step of fusing the interfacing.
- If you wish, you can add small pockets to the book cover. This is especially useful for fabric and felt book covers that allow carrying pens, erasers or bookmarks.
- If using plain paper, consider painting, decorating, or coloring it before making book covers.
