DIY making tutorial of clamshell handmade bag
- Lets take making a cloth bag for the abacus as an example. Prepare one long and one short piece of fabric and cut it to the appropriate size. (Appropriate size as shown in the picture)
- Prepare lining fabrics of the same size.
- Sew the fabric and lining together (red thread)
- Fold the bag mouth inward and use a sewing machine to lock the edge (yellow line). (This is a bag opening).
- Insert the abacus and determine the depth (bottom) of the bag. Mark (marked with a red line).
- Similarly, determine the length of the flap. Leave a 1cm seam allowance at the edge, cut the lining and front fabric to a suitable length and sew.The lining can be slightly longer.
- Adjust the other side of step "3" to the inside and sew. (black line)
- Turn it back to the front, repeat step "5" to determine the bottom position, and put it into the abacus to see if the size is appropriate.
- Next determine the location of the Velcro and temporarily secure it with double-sided tape.
- At this point, it’s time to sew and paste the lining on one side.
- Also on the lid side, sew Velcro on the lining.
- The interior is as shown in the picture. Its structure is shown in the black and white line at the bottom of the figure.
- Sew the overlap slightly. Adjust the width slightly, and adjust it a few times depending on the size of the object you place it.
- Let go from the side and pull out the cover.
- Half is the "front", put it into the abacus and see if the width is appropriate
- Return to step "13" and turn back to the inside of the bag. After determining the width, sew both sides of the cover with thread (yellow thread).
- Determine lid shape. You can use round objects, such as cups, to draw lines and sew with a sewing machine.
- Next, set it aside. Connect one side side by side to the other side (green wire).
- Make a reserved opening in the inner lining. (Purple Line)
- Only the lining is sewn.
- The ends (yellow thread) are sewn so the lining won't come off.
- The effect is shown in the picture below.
- You can cut off the corners.
- Turn the reserved opening back to the front and sew the reserved opening.
- When turning it back to the front, you can use chopsticks or a ruler to adjust the shape.
- Put the abacus in your bag and try it on for size.
- Close the lid and see the effect.
- Side rendering.
- You can sew small buttons on the top of the bag cover for decoration. Our handmade abacus bag is finished. You can also use the same method to hand-make long-shaped flap cloth bags similar to other ones. This is the tutorial for making DIY flap hand-made bags.
