Homemade cloth shoes are made by hand. Look at the final product in the picture above. Doesn’t it feel like home and very comfortable? After a tiring day, when you return home and put on the homemade comfortable cloth shoes, you will feel much better. I still hesitate. What, let’s DIY with the craft editor.
Materials for making home cloth shoes:
Shoe upper fabric (burlap or thick cotton, other specialty fabrics are also acceptable), about 1/4 meter.
Shoe lining cloth (comfortable cotton), about 1/4-1/2 meter.
Thick glued cotton, half a meter. Waterproof and non-slip cloth, about 1/8 meter of shoe sole padding with a certain degree of support, for example, I use 1-2 pairs of wood pulp insoles, 1/8 meter of sponge cloth, etc.
Steps for making home cloth shoes:
First, use proofing paper to draw shoe samples. If you don’t have proofing paper, you can use newspaper, magazine paper, etc. Because they are slippers, the size of the shoes does not need to be precise, as long as they fit within a certain size range.
Then according to the shoe pattern, cut out one piece on the left and right sides of the shoe upper fabric (with seam allowance), one piece on the left and right sides of the shoe lining fabric (with seam allowance), one piece on the left and right sides of the shoe sole anti-slip cloth (with seam allowance), and one piece on the left and right sides of the shoe lining cloth (with seam allowance). The lining of the shoe body is the same), one on the left and right (with double seam allowance), and the cotton covering of the shoe body and sole is one on the left and right (with seamless seam allowance).
Be careful not to cut the upper of the shoe evenly, be sure to trace one on the front and one on the back..
After cutting, iron the glued quilting on the lining fabric. If your quilting is thin or the top fabric is thin and easy to wrinkle, then iron a layer on the top fabric as well.
The sole is the key to comfort. It must have a certain degree of hardness and support. Shoes that are too soft or too thin will be uncomfortable to walk on and can easily pinch your feet. The soles must be of moderate hardness and thickness to be comfortable on the feet. When making it, it should not be too hard and should have a little elasticity, otherwise it will be difficult to turn it over to the right side after sewing. I used the semi-finished embroidery pieces that I had stored in the past. They were used to make insoles for children. Adults have big feet and need to be assembled, so the three layers of a pair of shoes require about 10 pieces, which is still a bit wasteful. Later, I thought of a way to put the insoles directly. The more the merrier, I checked the insoles in the nearby market, but none of them had the right hardness and elasticity. After returning home, I accidentally discovered that the wood pulp insoles I bought before, coupled with a thick layer of quilted cloth with sponge, still meet the comfort requirements. You may wish to find your own suitable insoles. After several layers of materials are found and sewn together, they are wrapped in the ironed and cotton-covered sole lining and sewn together. The seam allowance for the lining of the sole must be larger, otherwise the content inside will be too thick to be wrapped. In the case of the one I took, it would be more difficult to wrap.
When making the shoe body, the upper fabric can be decorated first, such as painting. The back interface of the decorated surface fabric and lining fabric are sewn separately for each piece.
Then put the surface of the left foot and the lining together, and the surface of the right foot and the lining together. Be sure not to reverse it. Just like sewing other clothes, be careful when sewing.Front and front facing each other. Turn it back in this way to hide the seam inside where you can't see it. After aligning it, fix it with a stitch and sew a circle around the inner shoe opening.
After sewing, cut out the teeth at a curved position so that it will be flatter when turned over. Be careful not to cut the suture.
After sewing, turn it to the front and press the thread. The first one is pressed by a machine and is not flat enough. The following ones are all pressed by hand and are very beautiful.
Next, place the shoe body and sole anti-slip cloth face to face, fix them with beads and sew them tightly. Note that the left and right legs of this fabric must be distinguished. I will turn it over once. After sewing it, cut the teeth at the curved position.
Look from the front, this is how the teeth will look like after they are cut.
In this way, we get the outer shell of a pair of shoes and the lining of a pair of shoes.
Place their broken parts facing each other and put them together top and bottom. Press the cut seam of the shoe body in little by little, and sew it together with the lining of the shoe, hiding the stitching.

Turn it over vigorously, turn it over to the front, and the shoe is basically finished.

If you don’t have a painting, you can use the remaining scraps to make some small decorations.
There is also a process in Japanese handicraft books, which is to lower the back of the shoe and sew it up. This is the result after I sewed it.
You have finished making a pair of beautiful and warm home cloth shoes. The effect when worn is as shown in the picture above.
