Lei Feng, formerly known as Lei Zhengxing, was born in Changsha, Hunan Province on December 18, 1940. He joined the Chinese Young Pioneers in 1954, the Peoples Liberation Army of China in 1960, and the Communist Party of China in November of the same year. He was self-denial, devoted to public service, helped others, and did a lot of good things for the collective and the people. He was awarded second-class merit once and third-class merit twice.
He is a comrade who serves the people wholeheartedly, a soldier of the Chinese Peoples Liberation Army, and a great communist fighter. As an ordinary soldier of the Peoples Liberation Army of China, Lei Feng helped countless people in his short life. "Lei Fengs Diary" is a touching story that has moved countless readers. On August 15, 1962, Lei Feng died in the line of duty at the age of 22. Because Lei Feng was keen on helping others, the word Lei Feng has become synonymous with "good people and good deeds" in mainland China. Mao Zedong personally wrote the inscription "Learn from Comrade Lei Feng" on March 5, 1963, and designated March 5 as the Memorial Day for Learning from Lei Feng. President Xi Jinping pointed out that Lei Feng’s “energy of faith, heart of great love, selfless spirit, and enterprising spirit” are the best reflection of our national spirit.
