Ash tree, Latin name: Fraxinus chinensis Roxb. Deciduous tree of the genus Ash in the family Oleaceae, with gray-brown bark and longitudinal splits. Buds are broadly ovate or conical, covered with brown pubescent or glandular hairs. Branchlets are yellowish brown, rough, hairless or sparsely villous, soon bald, with small, inconspicuous lenticels. Terminal leaflets and lateral leaflets are approximately the same size or slightly larger, with apex sharp to acuminate, base obtuse or wedge-shaped, leaf margins neatly serrated, glabrous above, glabrous below, or sometimes covered with white long soft edges along both sides of the midrib. Hairy, midrib flat above, persistent calyx close to nut base, often deeply split on one side. The flowering period is from April to May, and the fruiting period is from July to September. The plant has strong germination ability, straight wood structure, rapid growth, soft and tough, and is used for making various utensils; the bark is also used for medicinal purposes.
