Marigold is a member of the Asteraceae family. It is an annual herb with upright, thick stems, thin longitudinal ribs, and branches spreading upward. The leaves are pinnately divided; there are a few glands along the leaf margin. The inflorescence is solitary; the involucre is cup-shaped with a toothed tip; the ligular flowers are yellow or dark orange; the corolla of the tubular flowers is yellow. Achenes are linear, base reduced, black or brown, covered with short microhair; pappus has 1-2 long awns and 2-3 short, blunt scales. Flowering period is July-September.
