Sunflower (Latin: Helianthus annuus), belonging to the sunflower family, is an annual with a height of 1 to 3.5 meters. The stem is upright, round and angular, hard and covered with white coarse hairs. The broad ovate leaves are usually alternate, with sharp or acuminate apex, 3 veins at the base, coarsely serrated edges, rough hairs on both sides, and long stalks. Flower heads, 10 to 30 cm in diameter, solitary on stem tops or branch ends.

Native to South America, the domesticated species was brought to Europe from North America by the Spaniards in 1510 and was initially used for ornamental purposes.
