The Spring Festival is one of the oldest traditional festivals in China. There are many customs about the Spring Festival, such as posting Spring Festival couplets, wearing new clothes, paying New Year greetings, giving New Years money...but what about the origin of the Spring Festival?
According to legend, in ancient times, there was a monster called "Nian". During the Spring Festival, it climbed ashore from the sea and ate many children. People calculated the day when Nian would climb out of the sea and hurt people. On this day, people would go to the cave to take refuge together. There was an old woman who had inconvenient legs and feet and could only stay at home. A travel-worn guest came to her. At home, he said, "I will drive Nian away, so you can go up the mountain to take refuge!" The old woman went up the mountain dubiously.
Nian went ashore and saw only one person. The guests set off firecrackers. When Nian heard the sound, he covered his ears with his hands and lay down on the ground. Nian met again. The red couplet hurriedly ran into the sea and never came out again.
When people returned to the village, they speculated that the man had been eaten by Nian. But contrary to what people expected, not only was the guest not eaten by Nian, but he also scared Nian so much that he did not dare to hurt anyone again!
From then on , people set off firecrackers and put up Spring Festival couplets during the Spring Festival. There are no more hurtful things about the New Year, and everyone lives happily.
This is the origin of the Spring Festival. Whether it is true or not, this traditional Chinese festival is the best traditional Chinese culture.
