Simple drawing of caterpillar eating leaves

The Sphecodina abbottii caterpillar uses green spots on its brown skin to camouflage itself, making it difficult for others to spot it when it lies on a growing bunch of grapes. Adult Sphecodina abbottii caterpillars differentiate into two colors, one that mimics grape camouflage like this caterpillar pictured here, and one that turns brown like tree bark. In addition, the caterpillar has other defenses, such as false eyes. When an adult Sphecodina abbottii caterpillar is disturbed, it raises its tail and "glares" at the attacking animal with its artificial eyes. If the "glare" doesn't scare away the predators, the caterpillars will also make a harsh hissing sound.
