Tigers wait until dark to hunt . Once a tiger sees its prey, it sneaks as close to its victim as possible. Then the tiger lunged at the unsuspecting animal, usually standing up with its teeth and claws. If the prey is a large animal, the tiger bites its own throat to kill it; when killing prey, it is usually the small tiger that breaks its neck.
Tigers can eat up to 60 pounds (27 kilograms) of meat in a night, but more commonly they consume about 12 pounds (5 kilograms) during a meal. It may take several days for a tiger to finish its prey. The cat ate it whole, and covered the carcass with leaves and dust. When it starved, the tiger came back and gave it some more, until the meat was gone forever.
Unlike most members of the cat family, tigers seem to like water. They swim well and often cool off by soaking in streams or pools.
Tigers live in very cold parts of North Korea, Eastern Russia and China. *Tiger lives in countries and regions such as India and Southeast Asia where the climate is relatively hot. The entire range of the species is endangered. Tigers are over hunted for their fur and body parts, and many people use them for traditional medicine. Tiger habitats have also declined as humans have developed land uses such as farming, well logging, etc.
