Bengal tiger

Bengal tiger

The Bengal tiger has short, apricot hair. Yellow with narrow black stripes; the old body has manes on the cheeks, a white belly, dense stripes on the head, black behind the ears with white spots. The average male Bengal tiger is 3 meters long, with the exception of the Sundarbans. Weight 210 kg.

The fur of an adult Bengal tiger is brown and white with black stripes. There are also a small number of white Bengal tigers with black stripes on a white background, due to genetic mutations. It is carnivorous and feeds on various large and small mammals. The Bengal tigers prey is mainly monkeys, sika deer, Indian bison, sambar, and wild boar.

Cooch Behar’s data on Bengal tigers in northeastern India is very detailed. The data on male tigers is very rich. The total curve length of 62 male tigers is 295.6 (274-318) cm, the curve body length of 51 male tigers is 203.5 (187-217) cm, and the tail length of 50 male tigers is 295.6 (274-318) cm. The length is 93.9(73-107)cm. Unfortunately, his measurement method is not standardized. There is very little data on linear body length (body length measured by distance measurement between two points). There are only 8 individuals measured between 1898 and 1900 (174-194cm, average 184.8cm). ;At the same time, the curvilinear body length of these eight tigers is 198.3 (187-210) cm.

As mentioned above, the average tail length of male tigers is 93.9cm; while the curved body (full) length is on average 13.5cm longer than the true body (full) length. Based on this, we can use the following two methods to make a simple estimate of the body length of male tigers in northeastern India:

①The average curve length of the 62 male tigers measured is 295.6cm, and the straight length is 295.6cm. That is 282.1cm; its tail length averages 93.9cm, and its real average body length is 188.2cm.

②The average curved body length of 51 male tigers measured is 203.5cm, and the real average body length should be 190cm.

The reason for the difference between the two methods is that some smaller individuals only recorded the full length but not the body length.

There is relatively little data on female tigers. The total curve length of 21 female tigers is 268.4 (259-288) cm; among them, the curve body length of 17 female tigers is 179.1 (171-191) cm, and the tail length is 90.4 (79-99) cm. There is only one female tiger whose straight body length is measured. The curved body length is 180cm, the straight body length is 168cm, and the tail length is 96cm.

Based on the average curve body length of 21 female tigers, the average straight line length is 256.4cm, and the straight body length is an average of 166cm; and based on the average curve body length of 17 female tigers, 179cm, the average straight body length is 179cm. straight lineThe average body length is 167cm.

All the tigers measured by Brander in Madhya Pradesh were measured using the straight-line method. Unfortunately, only the full length was given, but not the body length and tail length; among them, the total length of 42 male tigers was 281.9 (266.7-312.4)cm, the total length of 39 female tigers is 254 (238.8-276.9)cm; excluding the average tail length of male tigers of 93.9cm and female tigers of 90.4cm, their average body lengths are estimated to be 188cm and 163.6cm respectively.

Hewwet measured a total of 20 male tigers in northern India. The total length of the curve is 292.2 (272-306) cm. It is estimated that the total length of the straight line is about 288.7cm, and the straight body length is an average of 184.8cm. The total curved length of the five female tigers is 269.6 (264-279) cm. The total straight length is estimated to be about 257.6cm, and the average straight body length is 167.2cm.

To sum up, the average body length of Bengal tigers in central and northern India is about 188cm for males and about 166cm for females.
