Marguerite Ann Johnson (April 4, 1928 - May 28, 2014), also translated as Maya Angelou, was an American writer and poet. She has published six autobiographies, five books of essays, several books of poetry, and has worked as a screenwriter for many plays, films, and television shows over a span of more than 50 years. She has received numerous awards and more than 30 honorary doctorates. She is best known for her series of autobiographies, recounting experiences from her childhood and early adulthood.
