The National Stadium (Birds Nest) is located in the south of the central area of ??Beijing Olympic Park and is the main stadium for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. The project covers a total area of ??21 hectares and has approximately 91,000 audience seats. The opening and closing ceremonies of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, track and field competitions and football finals were held. After the Olympic Games, it became a large-scale professional place for Beijing citizens to participate in sports activities and enjoy sports entertainment, and became a landmark sports building and Olympic heritage.

The stadium was designed by Jacques Herzog, de Meuron, Ai Weiwei and Li Xinggang, and was constructed by Beijing Urban Construction Group. The shape of the stadium is like a "nest" and cradle that nurtures life, embodying humankinds hope for the future. The designers did not do anything superfluous to this venue and left the structure exposed, thus naturally forming the appearance of the building.

Construction started on December 24, 2003 and was completed in March 2008, with a total cost of 2.267 billion yuan. As a national landmark building and the main stadium of the 2008 Olympic Games, the National Stadium has very remarkable structural features. The stadium is a special sports building and a large sports venue. The main structure is designed to have a service life of 100 years, with a fire resistance level of Level 1, a seismic fortification intensity of 8 degrees, and an underground engineering waterproofing level of 1.

In April 2014, Chinas Top Ten Contemporary Architecture Review Committee selected more than 1,000 landmark buildings in China based on four indicators: age, scale, artistry and influence. Twenty buildings were initially evaluated. This resulted in the top ten contemporary buildings. Beijings Birds Nest—National Stadium is one of the buildings shortlisted for the preliminary evaluation.
